The Family Stress Center (FSC) has been serving Contra Costa County since 1978 with counseling, programs and support to treat and prevent child abuse and neglect, and help their families. More than 7,000 children and families are served each year with its multi-program approach.

In April, state Sen. Tom Torlakson and Assemblyman Mark DeSaulnier honored the center by co-sponsoring a California Legislative Resolution commending the organization and 30 years of service.

The resolution was sent to board president Tristan Piper from Torlakson's office. It received a formal acknowledgement at the third annual Sunday at the Plaza event, held April 13 by Ellen's Guild, the social activities and fundraising support group of FSC. Ellen's Guild president Karen Dolder presented the resolution to the assembled guests.

In addition to the excitement of the state resolution, "the dinner event, which included both a silent and live auction, raised over $23,000 for Family Stress Center," said Jennifer Stasch, publicity coordinator. "All auction items were generously donated by Bay Area businesses, families and individuals."

Honored at the event were Al and Cheryl Balogh, and Chris and Sara Truebridge of Shapell Homes, "who have been ardent supporters of Family Stress Center's programs and services for many years," said Stasch.

"Annually, the employees and partners of Shapell Homes generously donate to Family Stress Center with the company matching their donations, thanks to the coordinated efforts of both families," she added. "All four have guided and supported Family Stress Center with service on the board of directors and countless volunteer hours."

Hats off to the FSC on all it does for the children in our county and for their families. Hopefully, the organization and all involved with it will be around for many years to come.
